I have been a Carnegie Center Author Academy mentor five times and have taught and led many workshops on the craft of writing.
I have 17 years of experience as a copy and developmental editor. Work that has been marked by my red pen has won or been nominated for a host of awards, including the Hugo, Nebula, and Stoker.
I’m originally from a little place named Big Creek, KY. It’s a typical Appalachian community with close-knit families and a deep suspicion of outsiders. I was raised poor (my dad was a victim of the coal industry crash of the early 80s), but as long as I had something to read, I was good.
I did well in school and received a scholarship to attend Transylvania University in Lexington, KY. It was quite a culture shock, but it exposed me to a world outside of the hills. I picked up a degree in computer science and graduated in 1996, right on the cusp of the dot-com explosion. It was a good time to be a software programmer.
In 2005, I felt a call to explore my creative side. That’s when I started my side hustle known as Apex Publications. It wasn’t until 2016 that Apex became my full-time job.
These days, I’m still operating Apex, but I also do freelance work for additional income. Freelancing is also a great way to add variety to your day-to-day work.
